Fanshawe Cross Country Teams Golden at Provincials

(London, Ontario) – In Albion Hills on Saturday, the Fanshawe Falcons Cross Country teams competed in the OCAA Provincial Championships hosted by Humber College.

 

The Fanshawe Women's team captured OCAA gold in the six kilometer women's race, with a score of 33, six points ahead of St. Clair. Tamara DePauw (Thamesville, ON) led the Falcons with an individual fourth place finish, completing the course in 26:27. Katie Rice (Ingersoll, ON) had an impressive fifth place finish, ten seconds behind her teammate. Samantha Reidy (London, ON) and Julia Latham (Owen Sound, ON) finished 12th and 19th respectively. Brooke Jez (Teeswater, ON) in 23rd and Allyson Kwaciak (Grand Bend, ON) in 29th rounded out the Falcons team. DePauw and Rice were both named to the Women's All-Ontario First Team and Reidy to the Second Team.

 

The Fanshawe Men's team also won the provincial title in an exciting eight kilometer race with a score of 17, just four points ahead of St. Clair. Falcons' Seth Marcaccio (London, ON) claimed the individual gold medal with a time of 26:18, his second career individual OCAA gold. Teammate Sandy Freeland (Kitchener, ON) captured the bronze medal, running 26:51. Fanshawe's Luke Groulx (Blind River, ON) and Ethan Roche (London, ON) were close behind with 6th and 7th place finishes. John Berthelot (Blind River, ON) and Kyle Luyt (London, ON) rounded out Fanshawe's top finishers, crossing the line in 9th and 12th place respectively. Marcaccio, Freeland, Groulx and Roche were all named to the Men's All-Ontario First Team. Berthelot and Luyt were named to the All-Ontario Second Team.

 

Fanshawe Head Coach Ashley VanderVecht was named the OCAA Coach of the Year.

 

On November 13, both Fanshawe teams will compete in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country National Championships hosted by St. Mary's University in Calgary, Alberta. The Falcons' Men's squad are the reigning CCAA National Champions.
