Fanshawe Men’s Volleyball Sweeps St. Clair

(London, Ontario) – The Falcons Men's Volleyball team (1-2) picked up their first win of the season on Wednesday evening at the Glenn Johnston Athletics Center, sweeping the St. Clair Saints (0-3).

It was back and forth to start the match, with the Birds getting points from a Daniel Ridings (St. Catharines, ON) kill and Broderick Refflinghaus (London, ON) block. With the frame tied at 21, a huge hit from Tanner Paterson (Baden, ON) put the red and white ahead. The Falcons would claim set one 25-22, with Ridings leading the way with six points in the frame.

The home team had momentum going into the second set, with a Jack Voght (Ottawa, ON) left side kill exciting the Fanshawe bench. Middle blocker Evan West (London, ON) followed that with a hit of his own to give the Falcons a 14-11 lead. St. Clair chipped away to tie the set at 21. Both teams gave their best efforts, exchanging the leads. A huge stuffed block from local setter Elliott Leslie kept the Birds on top and Fanshawe won a hard-fought set two, 29-27.

The Falcons flew out to a 7-1 lead to open the third frame. Excellent serving from West and Leslie stretched Fanshawe's lead to 20-7. A kill from Refflinghaus would put the game away, giving the Birds a 25-10 set win to complete the sweep.

Ridings had a game-high 14 points for the Falcons in the match. Fanshawe will now travel up north to face Cambrian at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 19 and Boreal on Sunday, February 20 at 3:00 p.m. The matches can be streamed at www.fanshawefalcons.ca/watchlive.
