Falcons Men’s Cross Country Team Crowned National Champions

(London, Ontario) – It was a cold and snowy CCAA National Championship race on Saturday afternoon in Grande Prairie, Alberta, but that didn't stop the Fanshawe Falcons. The Fanshawe Men's Cross Country squad was crowned the CCAA National Champions for the fourth time.

 

In the Men's eight kilometer race, the No. 1 CCAA ranked Fanshawe Men's team won the National gold medal with a score of 33. Second place St. Clair finished with a team score of 70. Sandy Freeland (Kitchener, ON) led the Falcons with a third place individual finish in a time of 28:33 to capture the Men's Individual bronze medal. Patrick Smith (Ottawa, ON) finished in eighth with a time of 29:30 and Luke Groulx (Blind River, ON) finished 11th. Freeland and Smith were named All-Canadians for their excellent performances. Dion Killens (Grand Bend, ON), Lucas Reid (London, ON) and John Berthelot (Blind River, ON) round out the Falcons roster.

 

In the six kilometer Women's race, the Falcons finished fifth overall as a team. The top finisher was Jessica Martin (Port Elgin, ON) with a time of 26:23, good for eighth individually and an All-Canadian award. Ashley VanderVecht is the Head Coach of the Fanshawe Cross Country team.
