Women's Volleyball Team Concludes Season with Playoff Loss to Mohawk

(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Falcons Women's Volleyball team took the road on Thursday evening for an OCAA first round playoff game versus the Mohawk Mountaineers in Hamilton.

The Women's Volleyball team (4-6, 7th in West) fell to the No. 6 CCAA ranked Mountaineers (9-1, 2nd in West) in three sets to conclude their 2021-22 campaign.

The teams traded points to start the set, with a big block from Fanshawe setter Ashley Rafferty (Peace River, AB). But Fanshawe was in tough, as Mohawk leads the league in both hitting percentage and service aces per set. Lauren Vahrmeyer (Vineland, ON) had a couple of kills for the Falcons, but Mohawk's well-balanced offense began to pull away mid-set. The Mountaineers went on to win set one 25-15.

A kill from rookie middle Hannah Onyema (St. Thomas, ON) got the Falcons on the board in the second set. Unfortunately, Mohawk used their momentum from the opening frame to take a lead on the Falcons. A back row hit from Kiana Lee (London, ON) gave the Falcons a spark, but Mohawk prevailed and took set two 25-16.

The Falcons did not give up and took a slim lead to open the third set. Dez Chanthaboury (Kitchener, ON) had an impressive block to keep Fanshawe ahead 7-6 early in the frame. Mohawk tried to pull away after a 4-0 run midway through the set, but back-to-back blocks for the Birds shut down the Mohawk attack. Fanshawe stayed within reach with a left-side hit by Sammie Gibson (London, ON). Despite their best efforts, the Falcons fell in set three 25-21 and were defeated 3-0. Chanthaboury and Lee led the Birds with six points each in the match.
