(London, Ontario) – On Friday afternoon in Welland, Ontario, the Fanshawe Women's Volleyball team (23-1) won their CCAA bronze medal quarterfinal against the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics in three straight sets.

Fanshawe faced adversity right from the outset, as they were down two starters due to injury before the match even began. The Mystics took an early lead in set one and the Falcons found themselves down 22-17 late in the frame. Fanshawe showed their resilience and started a comeback with a right side kill from Meghan Morelli (London, ON). Hits from Ainsley Acton (Lucan, ON) and Janelle Albert (Brampton, ON) continued the Falcons' momentum. A Tarea Heshka (Erin, ON) kill gave the Birds an exciting 25-23 first set victory, as Fanshawe ended the set with an 8-1 run.

The red and white used the energy from the opening frame to take the lead in the second set. They would go on to win set two 25-20. The Falcons came out flying again in the third set, jumping out to a 14-6 lead midway through the set. Despite MSVU's best efforts, Fanshawe would take the third set 25-17 and the match 3-0. Fanshawe setter Katie Stewart (Gananoque, ON) was called on to start due to the Falcons injury situation and she had a tremendous game. She was named player of the match, notching 37 assists, to help lead Fanshawe to its first ever match win at the CCAA National Championships.

The Falcons will now play in a CCAA bronze medal semi-final against the loser between the #7 Cavaliers de Bois-de-Boulogne and the #1 Vancouver Island University Mariners on Saturday at 12:00pm EST.
