Falcons Drop First Matchup Against St. Clair

(London, Ontario) - The Fanshawe Women's Basketball team (1-2) fell 86-69 on Saturday evening at home against the St. Clair Saints (3-0).

Alison Cotton (London, Ontario) was the first to get on the board after sinking a contested shot, assisted by second-year Shauntee Centen (London, Ontario). Down 9-5, the Birds went on a run. Myra Ciccarelli (Hamilton, ON) and rookie Jamie Stahlbaum (Aylmer, ON) combined for a pair of three-pointers to tie the game at 15-15 after the first quarter.

To start the second, first-year Sidney Deleary (Chippewas of the Thames) swished a three-ball. Later in the game, the visitors began to pull away, but the Falcons fought back. Scrappy plays such as offensive boards and second-chance points from Deleary and Cotton would keep Fanshawe within distance. Just before the buzzer, Deleary hit a three to decrease the Saints' lead. The visitors led 39-25 at the half.

Fanshawe would close on St. Clair's advantage after Deleary assisted Cotton on a beautiful layup. Then, St. Clair went on a dominating run. To close the quarter, Cicarelli nailed a triple, but the visitors led 60-46 to go into the fourth.

Fighting to take the lead, Cotton stole the ball from St. Clair to sink a layup on a fastbreak. Later in the quarter, Centen hit a three ball and then Cicarelli knocked down a floater in the middle of the key on back-to-back plays. Despite the Birds' efforts, they fell 86-69. Fifth-year Cotton led the way for the Falcons with 17 points and shot 7-13 from the field. Deleary also chimed in with 16 points.

The Falcons look to bounce back at home on Saturday, November 11 at 1:00 p.m. against the Niagara Knights (2-2).
