Falcons Women’s Basketball Team Falls to Mohawk

(London, Ontario) – On Sunday afternoon at home, the Fanshawe Women's Basketball team (1-5) fell to the Mohawk Mountaineers (3-2) by a score of 56-45.

Fanshawe started strong defensively, with three quick blocks from Falcons forward Mackenzie Van Dyk (Nairn, ON). A steal from Jordan Braekevelt (Sarnia, ON) resulted in points on the other end from rookie guard Renee Maat (Oakville, ON). Mohawk was able to make a couple shots of their own and held a slim 10-8 advantage after one quarter. The Mountaineers came out strong in the second quarter, outscoring the Falcons and extending their lead. The Falcons got seven points from Grace Shea (Caledonia, ON) in the quarter, as she dominated the paint and offensive glass. Legacie Blackbird (Walpole Island) closed out the quarter with a midrange jumper, however Fanshawe found themselves down 32-21 at half time.

Mohawk knocked down numerous jumpers to extend their lead in the third frame. Back-to-back triples from Chelsea Brush (Kingsville, ON) and Blackbird kept the Falcons in the game, however going into the fourth quarter the score was 48-33 for the Mountaineers. The Falcons did not let up, getting layups from Shea and Micaela Howard (London, ON). Unfortunately, the red and white could not come back from the earlier deficit and fell 56-45. Shea had a career-high 16 points for the Falcons and added nine rebounds.

The Falcons will play their fourth game in seven days on Tuesday, March 1, when they travel to Brampton to face the Sheridan Bruins (1-5) at 6:00 p.m. The game can be streamed at www.fanshawefalcons.ca/watchlive.
