Fanshawe Women’s Basketball Drops Close Contest to Lambton

(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Women's Basketball team (1-3) fell to the Lambton Lions (2-2) by a score of 51-49 on Wednesday evening at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre.

The Lions got off to a hot start, shooting 44% from the field in the opening quarter to go up early on the home team. Put-backs from Jordan Braekevelt (Sarnia, ON) and Alison Cotton (London, ON) got the Falcons on the board, but Fanshawe trailed 21-8 after the first frame.

A layup from Jessica Cameron (Calgary, AB) started a strong second quarter for Fanshawe, as they began to find their offensive stride. A jumper from Micaela Howard (London, ON), followed by a triple from Legacie Blackbird (Walpole Island) got the Birds back in the game and cut Lambton's lead to 31-24 going into the locker room at the break.

Strong post play from Mackenzie Van Dyk (Nairn, ON) got the Falcons off to a good start in the second half with back-to-back offensive rebounds and a layup. Fanshawe continued to dominate the paint with a Grace Shea (Caledonia, ON) post move and finish. Unfortunately, the Lions hit a pair of deep three-pointers to maintain a 41-36 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Falcons chipped away at the Lambton lead with a pair of free throws from Van Dyk. Blackbird then tied the game at 41 with a shot from beyond the arc. Unfortunately, the Lions responded with a made shot of their own to go back on top. Despite Fanshawe grabbing multiple offensive rebounds, their shots would not drop and they fell to the Lions 51-49. Shea had a team-high 13 points for the Falcons and added nine rebounds.

Next up, the Falcons travel to Ancaster to play the Redeemer Royals (2-3) on Friday, February 25 at 6:00 p.m. The game can be streamed at www.fanshawefalcons.ca/watchlive.
