Angou Leads No. 4 Falcons to Victory on Senior Night

(London, Ontario) – On Thursday evening at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre, the No. 4 CCAA ranked Fanshawe Women's Basketball squad (17-1) concluded regular season play by defeating the Mohawk Mountaineers (12-7), 84-64.

 

Senior shooting guard Mikhaila Wright (London, ON) opened the game strong for the Falcons with seven points and five rebounds in the first frame. A jumper from fifth-year forward Natalie Warren (London, ON) concluded first quarter play, giving Fanshawe a 21-11 lead.

 

Chuot Angou (London, ON) went off in the second quarter, scoring 13 points on 4/5 from the field and 4/4 from the free throw line. A nice pass from Jessica Jordan (Chatham, ON) then set up Mackenzie Van Dyk (Parkhill, ON) for the layup. The Birds maintained a 46-30 advantage at the half.

 

Mohawk came out strong in the third quarter, shooting 41% from the field to chip away at the home team's lead. However, the Mountaineers could not contain Angou, who scored an additional nine points for the Birds. Going into the final quarter the score was 63-51 in favour of the Falcons.

 

Two more made free throws from Angou in the fourth quarter set a new Fanshawe Women's Basketball record for best free throw percentage in a season with 89.6%. She also currently has the best free throw percentage in the OCAA. Rookie guard Legacie Blackbird (Walpole Island, ON) added five fourth-quarter points as the Falcons went on to win the game 84-64. As a team, Fanshawe shot 50% from the field and outrebounded Mohawk 50-35.

 

Angou finished the game with 28 points on 53% from the field, while senior teammates Wright and Warren contributed 13 and 10 points respectively. Wright, Angou and Warren are the highest-scoring teammates in Fanshawe Women's Basketball history with 1069, 969 and 861 career points.

 

Next up, the Falcons will host a first round playoff game on Saturday, February 29 against a to be determined opponent from the East Division.
