No. 4 Fanshawe Women’s Basketball Team Defeats Conestoga

(London, Ontario) – The No. 4 nationally ranked Fanshawe Women's Basketball team (16-1) defeated the Conestoga Condors (9-7) at home 93-62 on Saturday afternoon.

 

Fifth-year forward Natalie Warren (London, ON) opened the scoring for the Falcons with a layup assisted by Alison Cotton (London, ON). Jessica Cameron (Calgary, AB) then hit a nice shot from beyond the arc to extend Fanshawe's lead. Conestoga would stay within reach with strong play inside the paint. After the first quarter, the score was 30-19 for the home squad.

 

The scoring slowed for both teams in the second quarter, but a nice pick and roll by rookie forward Grace Shea (Caledonia, ON) got the home crowd on their feet. Chuot Angou (London, ON) scored two free throws to make the score 46-30 after 20 minutes of play.

 

Conestoga had a strong third quarter, shooting 63% from the field. Fanshawe would maintain their lead on second chance points from Jordan Braekevelt (Sarnia, ON) and Bethany Miller (London, ON), followed by a strong take to the rim from Ashleigh LaBlance (Wallaceburg, ON). The Falcons were up by a score of 73-55 after the third frame.

 

In the final quarter, the red and white stepped up their defense, holding the Condors to only seven points. Mikhaila Wright (London, ON) scored two points at the charity stripe, then Cotton would get a steal and layup for the Falcons. Legacie Blackbird (Walpole Island, ON) hit a triple that excited the Glenn Johnston Athletics Centre and Fanshawe went on to win the game 93-62.

 

Every player on the Falcons scored at least a point in the contest, resulting in an impressive 39 bench points. The Falcons will look to record their 14th consecutive win when they conclude regular season play at home on Thursday, February 20. Tip off against the visiting Mohawk Mountaineers (4-10) will be at 6pm.
