Women’s Basketball Beats Redeemer Behind Strong First Quarter

(London, Ontario) – The No. 5 CCAA ranked Fanshawe Women's Basketball team (4-1) defeated the Redeemer Royals (0-5) by a score of 98-48. The Falcons used an 18-2 start to the game to propel them to victory on Saturday afternoon at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre.

 

Mikhaila Wright (London, ON) would start off the scoring with a triple for the Falcons. A great block from Mackenzie Van Dyk (Parkhill, ON) gave the red and white momentum. London natives Chuot Angou and Natalie Warren had strong takes to the basket, followed by a jump shot from Legacie Blackbird (Walpole Island, ON) to extend Fanshawe's lead to 28-8 after the first quarter.

 

In the second frame, a steal from Sydney Kendellen (London, ON) assisted fast break points for teammate Jessica Jordan (Chatham, ON). An offensive rebound from Taylor Hill (Ohsweken, ON) set up Ashleigh LaBlance (Wallaceburg, ON) for a layup. A Bethany Miller (London, ON) three pointer would make the score 52-25 at half time.

 

Hill set up Jordan Braekevelt (Sarnia, ON) for the pick and roll layup in the third quarter. Hill then intercepted a pass on defense and scored another bucket for the home team. Jessica Cameron (Calgary, AB) capitalized on a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 79-40 going into the final frame. The Birds would continue to shut down the Royals in the fourth quarter and go on to complete a good team win 98-48. Every player scored for the Falcons, and the team had an impressive 30 assists on 35 made field goals.

 

Up next, the Falcons will face the Lambton Lions (5-2) back at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Wednesday, November 13 at 6pm.
