(London, Ontario) – On Wednesday night, the Fanshawe Women's Softball team (1-3) hosted the St. Clair Saints (4-2).  The Falcons split the doubleheader with the Saints, falling in the first game 12-4 before rebounding to win the second by a score of 7-6.

The Saints started strong in game one, scoring five runs in the second inning. MacKenzie Kelly (Oil Springs, ON) stole home in the third inning to get the Falcons on the board. A single by Ali Bergman (Embro, ON) then scored Fanshawe rookie Kennedi Roth (Stratford, ON) to make the score 6-2 as the home side tried to cut into the lead. The Saints added three runs in the fourth inning, then Fanshawe scored two in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 10-4. The Saints added a pair of runs before the end of the game and went on to win 12-4. St. Clair pitcher Sara Stiller notched the win, while Falcons pitcher Laura Chappel (Staffa, ON) (0-2) took the loss.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Samantha Fuller (Ingersoll, ON) had a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back doubles to left field from Roth and Bergman gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead after the opening inning. With Chappel on first base after a walk, Danni Smith (Hagersville, ON) hit a single to advance Chappel to third base. Chappel then made the score 3-0 for the home team after a passed ball. St. Clair would then score two runs in the third inning and add another in the fourth to tie the game at three. The Saints then notched two more runs in the top of the fifth to take the momentum and a 5-3 lead. Fanshawe struck back in the home half of the inning with RBIs from Jacey Lochert (Bellwood, ON) and Kelly in the bottom of the fifth inning to even the game 5-5. The Saints scored a run in the top of the sixth, but their lead would again be short lived. Fanshawe's Roth belted a pitch in the gap to right centrefield, which went all the way to the fence, scoring both the runner and herself with an inside the park homerun. Terrific pitching from Nichole Erb (Monkton, ON) held the Saints off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh and the Falcons picked up their first win of the season by a final score of 7-6. Roth was 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs, while Smith was 3 for 3 and added a run. Erb was stellar in throwing 138 pitches to get the complete game win for the Falcons to improve her record to 1-1 on the season. Olivia Elliot (1-2) was the losing pitcher for St. Clair.

The Falcons will next host the Durham Lords (5-1) on Saturday, September 15 at 1pm and 3pm. The annual Falcons Fest event will take place at Stronach Park, with free hot dogs available to fans while supplies last.
