(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Falcons badminton teams delivered strong performances at the OCAA Provincial Championships, held February 14-15 at Conestoga College. The Men's Doubles duo of Jan Dave Deocampo (Philippines) and Ty Nguyen (London, ON) secured a silver medal and a berth at the CCAA National Championships, while the Mixed Doubles team of Abhiram Nellikkattuparambil Girishkumar (India) and Nicole Kim (Concord, ON) claimed bronze.
Deocampo and Nguyen dominated Men's Doubles pool play on day one, finishing with a perfect 4-0 record without dropping a single game. The pair topped the West Division pool and recorded the best point differential of any team at +65. Advancing directly to the semi-final, they faced Lambton and continued their strong form, sweeping the Lions 21-18, 21-9 to reach the final match. However, their winning streak ended against Seneca, falling 21-11, 21-12. Despite the loss, the duo proudly brought home the OCAA silver medal and punched their ticket to CCAA National Championships which will be hosted by The King's University in Edmonton, Alberta from February 25 to March 1.
In the Mixed Doubles bracket, Nellikkattuparambil Girishkumar and Kim also had a strong showing, finishing second in the West Division pool with a 3-1 record and a +36 point differential. The duo fell to Centennial in the semi-final 21-8, 21-14 but rebounded to claim bronze with a hard-fought victory over George Brown 10-21, 21-7, 21-16.
Samantha Darby (London, ON) impressed in Women's Singles, finishing first in Pool A with a dominant 5-0 record and a pool-best +111 point differential. On day two, she found herself in the bronze medal match where she narrowly missed the podium, losing to Boreal 21-18, 21-12.
In Men's Singles, Andy Zhang (London, ON) and Ryan Los (London, ON) finished second and third in their respective pools but were both unable to advance past the quarterfinals. Hetvi Bhatt (India) and Amanda Liu (China) competed in Women's Doubles, finishing fifth in their pool, concluding their tournament run after day one.
