Fanshawe Hosts 33rd Annual Badminton Invitational

(London, ON) - The 33rd annual Fanshawe Badminton Invitational was held last weekend at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre.

 

First year athletes Abhiram Nellikkattuparambil Girishkumar (India) and Jan Dave Deocampo (Phillipines) led the Falcons to a third place finish in the Men's Doubles bracket. The duo was impressive all weekend as their performance was highlighted by a dominating victory in the quarterfinals, winning 21-10 in both games before falling to Centennial in the semifinal.

 

In Flight "B" for Men's Doubles, Falcons' duo Ronit Dutta (India) and Rakshith Shetty (India) were triumphant and took top spot in the flight. The two were involved in a fierce final match against George Brown College that saw them take the "B" crown with scores of 21-12, 17-21, and 22-20.

 

On the singles circuit, the Falcons had three players reach the quarterfinals in Men's Flight "A". Girishkumar and Dutta were joined by Ty Nguyen (London, ON) in the quarterfinal stage, which saw all three players put up valiant efforts before falling just short.

 

In Flight "A" for Women's Doubles, the duo of Marla Betts (Sudbury, ON) and Rejoice Nwokedi (Nigeria) reached the quarterfinals before falling to Humber.

 

Falcons assistant coaches Thao Le and San Dang competed in the Coaches Bracket of the tournament, claiming the first ever Coaches Cup at a Fanshawe Invitational. The Coaches Cup added an additional element of fun and competitive spirit that helped contribute to entertaining weekend of badminton.

 

Fanshawe's Badminton team will return to action on December 7th and 8th at the George Brown College Invitational tournament.
