Fanshawe Women’s Volleyball Team Golden at Provincials

Champs

(London, Ontario) – On Sunday afternoon in Sudbury at the OCAA Women's Volleyball Provincial Championship, the #4 nationally ranked Fanshawe Women's Volleyball team (22-0, 1st in West) completed their perfect OCAA season.

The Falcons defeated the Niagara Knights (12-9, 5th in West) in three straight sets (25-17, 26-24, 25-14) and were crowned the 2018-19 OCAA Provincial Champions. The OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship was Fanshawe's fifth overall, but first gold medal in 47 years (1971-72). The gold medal victory, along with Fanshawe Men's Volleyball's championship on Saturday, marks the first time in Fanshawe history that both volleyball programs have captured OCAA crowns in the same season. The two programs have combined for a remarkable 44-0 record this season.

Fanshawe started the OCAA Championships on Friday with a 3-0 win over Mohawk (15-6, 4th in West) in their quarterfinal game. Outside hitter Meghan Morelli (London, ON) was named player of the match with 14 points. In the semi-final on Saturday against the #14 Humber Hawks (15-6, 3rd in West), the Falcons swept the Hawks, ending Humber's 11-year reign as Provincial champions. Janelle Albert (Brampton, ON) had a game-high 20 points on an impressive .417 hitting percentage and was named the player of the match for her efforts.

In the championship final, OCAA Player of the Year Albert was once again named the player of the match as well as Tournament MVP. Teammates Morelli and Danielle Grasman (Komoka, ON) picked up Tournament All-Star honours for their excellent play over the three days.

The Falcons will now represent Ontario at the CCAA National Championship from March 7-9 in Welland, Ontario, hosted by Niagara College.
