Fanshawe’s Angou Named OCAA Female Athlete of the Year

Angou

(London, Ontario) – The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) announced today that Fanshawe Women's Basketball student-athlete Chuot Angou (London, ON) was named the 2019-20 OCAA Female Athlete of the Year. This is the fourth consecutive year where one of the Fanshawe Athletes of the Year has also been named an OCAA Athlete of the Year. Previous winners were Jade Kovacevic, Women's Soccer (2018-19), Cole Jordan, Men's Volleyball (2017-18) and Seth Marcaccio, Men's Cross Country (2016-17). A Fanshawe student-athlete had never won the OCAA's top award prior to 2016-17.

Angou led the Falcons to a second consecutive OCAA Provincial Championship this year, following a successful 17-1 regular season. The local standout was named the CCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year, the first time a Fanshawe basketball student-athlete has ever won the award. Angou was also named the back-to-back OCAA Player of the Year, a CCAA All-Canadian and OCAA Championship All-Star. The team captain averaged 18.4 points per game during the regular season and set a new OCAA record for best free throw percentage (89.6%). Angou followed a successful regular season with an outstanding OCAA Championship performance, where she averaged 25 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game. The combo guard shot an incredible 42% from the field, 50% from beyond the arc and 91% from the free throw line to bring home the gold medal. After only three seasons with the Falcons, Angou is second in career scoring with 969 points.

"Chuot has matured into a student-athlete that not only understands the game but also respects what it represents," stated Head Coach Bill Carriere. "Her talent on the court is undeniable but what is most impressive is her hunger for competing. She is always mentally focused and physically prepared to win. Chuot has also developed her leadership skills and buys in to our 'team-first' philosophy. She is a star and is an intense competitor who also motivates her teammates to succeed. Her work ethic and passion for the game has developed her into one of the best players the OCAA has ever seen."

"Chuot is a special student-athlete who has set a new standard of excellence for Fanshawe basketball," praised Fanshawe Manager of Athletics Nathan McFadden. "Her intensity, mental toughness, and strong will to compete and succeed are extraordinary. She is a terrific leader and teammate who had an exceptional season individually while leading her team to a second consecutive provincial championship."
