Falcons Women’s Basketball Finish with Highest Placing in 24 Years

(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Women's Basketball team completed their season on Saturday with a 24-3 record and tied for fifth place in Canada. This is the best placing of a Fanshawe Women's Basketball team in 24 years (1994-95, 4th).

 

On Thursday in their CCAA quarterfinal game, the Falcons lost a heartbreaker to Keyano College from Alberta by a score of 69-66. Fifth-year captain Laura Vere (Stratford, ON) had an impressive 14 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. CCAA All-Canadian Chuot Angou (London, ON) had a team-high 16 points and was awarded player of the game.

 

Fanshawe then played in a bronze medal quarterfinal on Friday against the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics from Nova Scotia. The Falcons defeated MSVU 70-63 behind 24 points from Angou, who was again named player of the game.  As a team, Fanshawe shot 44.6% from the field and 40% from behind the arc.

 

The Falcons then dropped their CCAA bronze medal semi-final to the Quebec champion and eventual bronze medalists Dawson Blues by a score of 85-70. Fanshawe had a good start to the game, shooting nearly 50% from 3-point range in the first half to give them a 44-40 lead at the break. Unfortunately, the talented Blues team came back strong in the second half to come away with the victory and ended Fanshawe's chances for a national medal. Angou led the Falcons with 20 points while Natalie Warren (London, ON) added 11. Fanshawe's player of the game was Mikhaila Wright (London, ON), who recorded 13 points.

 

For her strong performance throughout the tournament, Angou was named a CCAA Second Team Tournament All-Star. The Championship was hosted by Sainte Foy in Quebec City, Quebec.
