Top Ranked Falcons Women’s Basketball Team Defeats Mohawk

(London, Ontario) – At the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Thursday evening, the Falcons Women's Basketball squad (15-1) defeated the Mohawk Mountaineers (4-11) by a final score of 92-44. The Falcons are currently ranked #1 in the country.

 

Fanshawe jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game with a jumper from Chuot Angou (London, ON). The Mountaineers worked hard to stay with the Falcons, however did not have an answer for Angou, who notched 10 first quarter points. After the opening frame, the home team held a 25-15 advantage.

 

In the second quarter, Fanshawe got buckets in the paint from forwards Natalie Warren (London, ON), Alison Cotton (London, ON) and Mackenzie Van Dyk (Parkhill, ON). Angou added an additional 11 points, bringing her total to 21 at the half. Going into the locker room, the red and white were up 53-27.

 

In the third quarter, Bethany Miller (London, ON) hit back-to-back shots for the Falcons. Fanshawe continued to overpower Mohawk and began to pull away with a beautiful drive to the basket from Angou. Claire Dechet (Sarnia, ON) made the score 73-37 by getting to the rim at the third quarter buzzer to draw a foul and knocked down both free throws.

 

In the final frame, offensive rebounds from Ashley Galloway (Markham, ON) led to Falcons points, including a triple from Sydney Kendellen (London, ON). A put-back from Maddy Kielar (Newmarket, ON) sealed the deal for Fanshawe, as the home team would take the 92-44 victory. Angou led all scorers with 28 points and added 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Galloway had a game-high 10 rebounds.

 

Fanshawe will travel to Sarnia for their next game on Tuesday, February 5 versus the Lambton Lions (10-6).
