(London, Ontario) – Fanshawe Men's Volleyball Head Coach Patrick Johnston is the 2018-19 recipient of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association's (CCAA) Coaching Excellence Award. The CCAA Coaching Excellence Award recognizes coaching contributions to sport and to student-athlete development over a period of at least five years. Since its inception in 2001, this is the first time a Fanshawe College coach has received this honour.

Johnston started as the Falcons' Head Coach in 2013-14 and since then has captured five OCAA medals, including three Championships in 2015-16, 2017-18 and 2018-19. He has also led Fanshawe to three CCAA National medals, including this year's National Championship, a first in the College's history. Johnston has been named the OCAA West Coach of the Year three times (2013-16), OCAA Coach of the Year twice (2013-14 and 2015-16) and was the CCAA Coach of the Year in 2015-16. During his six years as Head Coach, he has an OCAA league record of 95-13 and playoff record of 26-7. This season, the Men's Volleyball team were ranked #1 nationally all year and completed a perfect 25-0 season. The Falcons completed their second consecutive perfect OCAA regular season to stretch the program's winning streak to 49 games overall.

Just as impressive as Johnston's success is his professional approach in how he goes about his business, always in a classy and respectful manner. "Patrick is a very high character individual and the complete package when it comes to a head coach," said Nathan McFadden, Fanshawe's Manager of Athletics. "He is an excellent communicator, tactician, recruiter, and motivator in addition to many other talents."

Johnston is also the Technical Director at the London Volleyball Club, where he oversees coach development, coach pathway and athlete development pathway for more than 1,000 athletes.

"From day one, Patrick has been a confident and trusted leader for our Men's Volleyball program," said McFadden. "He has personified coaching excellence in the CCAA, so I am thrilled to see him be honoured with this extremely prestigious award."
