(London, Ontario) – The winners of the OCAA Soccer league awards were released yesterday, with Fanshawe's Colin Elvie (Vittoria, ON) earning the West Division Defensive Player of the Year award. Elvie was also named a West Division First Team All-Star along with captain Engjell Qamili (London, ON). Striker Kyle Cameron (St. Catharines, ON) was named a West Division Second Team All-Star for the Falcons.
Elvie's magnificent defensive play contributed to five shutouts for the Birds and only allowed opponents to score 12 goals against the Falcons during their 10 regular season games. Elvie made numerous defensive saves throughout the season and led the Falcons' defense during their win in the qualifying playoff match against the Bruins on Wednesday. Elvie also scored his first goal for the Falcons against the No. 9 nationally ranked Humber Hawks on September 13.
In his third season with the Falcons, Qamili recorded two goals and three assists for Fanshawe. His control of the midfield, along with excellent set pieces, made Qamili a valuable asset for Fanshawe. Qamili's consistent leadership shined throughout the season for the Falcons.
Cameron was an offensive powerhouse for the Falcons this season, as he scored an impressive 10 out of Fanshawe's 27 goals. On September 26, Cameron achieved a hat-trick in a 7-0 win over the Lambton Lions. The striker also added four assists on the season. Cameron's speed and shifty moves made him a persistent threat to opponents' defensive lines.
The Falcons (7-2-2, 4th West) will travel to face the No. 2 nationally ranked George Brown Huskies' (10-0, 1st East) on Saturday, October 21. The quarterfinal match will begin at 7:30 p.m. The winner will advance to the OCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
