The Falcons Advance to the Quarterfinals After a Shoot-Out Win

(London, ON) – On Wednesday afternoon, Fanshawe's Men's Soccer team (7-2-2, 4th West) won their first-round playoff game against the Sheridan Bruins (5-6, 5th West) in an exciting matchup on home turf. The Falcons defeated Sheridan in penalty kicks (3-2), to advance in playoffs with a final score of 2-1.

In the 25th minute, the Bruins were first to get on the board. For the remainder of the half, the match was evenly controlled as the Falcons took eight shots to Sheridan's seven. At the break, the score stood at 1-0 in the visitor's favour.

With the Bruins still in the lead and only minutes remaining in injury time, the Birds extended their chances. Mateja Milidrag (London, ON) headed the ball toward the net and Oscar Calvo (London, ON) found the back of the net to send the game to overtime.

Excellent defensive play in overtime would leave both teams scoreless. During the penalty shoot-out, Fanshawe's Carlos Cabral (London, ON) and Sheridan's first shooter scored. During the next kicks for the Bruins, Falcons' keeper Dylan DaSilva (London, ON) came up huge for the Birds, making two brilliant saves. During the fifth and sixth kicks for the Falcons, Kyle Cameron (St. Catharines, ON) and Ronald Calvo (London, ON) scored, punching Fanshawe a ticket to the quarterfinals.

The Birds will be back in action on Saturday, October 21 in hopes of continuing their season. The Falcons will play the winner of the qualifying game between the No. 2 nationally ranked George Brown (11-0, 1st East) and Fleming (0-10-1, 8th East).
