Falcons Men’s Soccer Starts Season with Win Against Bruins

(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Men's Soccer team (1-0) started the season in the win column on Saturday afternoon, as they defeated the Sheridan Bruins (0-1) by a final score of 2-1.

 

The Falcons came out strong to start the match, scoring a goal in the 19th minute. Ryan Baker (Strathroy, ON) setup Ben Vyfschaft (London, ON) with a cross to go up 1-0. Bradley Heath (Markham, ON) extended Fanshawe's lead on a penalty kick in the 31st minute. The red and white outshot the Bruins 6-3 in the opening half.

 

Both teams battled in the second frame, creating multiple chances. Sheridan scored in the 77th minute, then continued to press to attempt to tie the game. The Falcons would come close to adding to their lead on a header off of the crossbar in the dying minutes but would hold on to win the spirited affair by a final score of 2-1. Fanshawe goalkeeper Ryan Miners (London, ON) had five saves on the match. The Falcons had the statistical advantage in both total shots (14-9) and corner kicks (5-4).

 

Next up, Fanshawe will be on the road against the defending CCAA champion Humber Hawks (1-0) on Wednesday, September 11.
