Fanshawe Men’s Basketball Team Victorious over the Knights

(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Men's Basketball team (3-2) won against Niagara (2-3) at home on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons were favoured by a score of 90-85.

To open the game, second-year Jack Tunstill (St. Thomas, ON) finished a remarkable put-back dunk and filled the gym with excitement. Giving the Birds an early lead, Josh Loblaw (Toronto, ON) scored seven consecutive points for Fanshawe, putting them up 9-4 over the visitors. The Falcons were on a roll in the first. Luka Philavong (London, ON) drove to the basket and found Aidan Whalen (Cambridge, ON) for the layup. Terence Williams (Windsor, ON) also added ten points off an impressive five shots in the quarter. To begin the second, the Birds were up 26-19.

Fanshawe continued to dominate in the second as Azad Chahal (London, ON) and Blake Roy (Springfield, ON) would both score to get in on the action. A three-pointer made by Philavong increased the Falcons' lead to ten. Whalen drained the final basket of the half as he drove from the top of the three and laid the ball in over a Niagara defender. At the half, the Birds led 39-47.

Williams began the third with a sweet spin move and a fading shot to add two to Fanshawe's advantage. After a long stretch without any points scored by both teams, second-year Mickey Griffiths (Oakville, ON) showed off his strength, finishing in the post against the Knights. The Falcons furthered their lead as Edge Capuno (Winnipeg, MB) sunk a floater and Chahal swished three shots behind the arc later in the quarter. After the third, the Birds' advantage stood at 11 points.

Despite Fanshawe's great play, the Knights would not go away and battled back in the fourth as they scored the first seven points in the quarter. The Knights were only down three points with little time remaining in the game, but outstanding plays from Fanshawe's leaders would give the Birds a 90-85 win. Loblaw, Chahal, and Williams led the Falcons with 23, 18, and 19 points respectively. Third-year Whalen also recorded a double-double in the game.

The Falcons look to increase their win streak to three when they travel to Redeemer (0-5) on Wednesday, November 15.
