Falcons Softball Sweeps Mohawk on Senior Night

(London, Ontario) – In their final home twin bill of the season on Wednesday evening, the Fanshawe Women's Softball team (15-7) swept the Mohawk Mountaineers (4-14) by scores of 12-3 and 8-2.

 

The Falcons came out flying in the first inning of game one, taking an early 5-0 lead with RBI's from Ali Bergman (Embro, ON), Emily Davis (London, ON) and an RBI triple from Jacey Lochert (Bellwood, ON). Fanshawe would continue to be solid from the plate, as Davis hit a 2-RBI triple to centrefield to make the score 9-0 after the second inning. The teams exchanged runs in the next few innings, and the Falcons would go on to win 12-3. Lochert went 3 for 4 at the plate, with three RBIs. Fanshawe's Andrea Webster (Wilsonville, ON) pitched a complete game and maintained her perfect 5-0 record with the win, while Mohawk's Kelsey Hanly (1-2) was the losing pitcher.

 

The Mountaineers regrouped in game two and went up 2-0 after the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the second, Fanshawe's Mackenzie Kelly (Oil Springs, ON) would score a run to cut the Mohawk lead. The Falcons heated up at the plate in the third inning, scoring four runs, including a 2-RBI single from Davis. Fanshawe took advantage of a few Mohawk errors in the bottom of the fourth inning and extended their lead to 7-2. The home team would add one more run and take the game by a final score of 8-2. Davis was 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs in the second game of the doubleheader and currently sits 4th in OCAA batting with a .429 average. The winning pitcher for the Falcons was Monkton native Nichole Erb (6-1), who had ten strikeouts, tying the Fanshawe single game strikeout record. Mohawk's pitcher Alyssa Van der Werf (3-6) took the loss.

 

The Falcons will travel to Windsor to take on the St. Clair Saints (15-3) on Sunday, October 14 for their final league games. They will then compete in the OCAA Provincial Championship at Conestoga College from October 19-20.
