Johnston was the Head Coach of the Falcons Men's Basketball program at Fanshawe for an impressive 35 years, from 1976-2012. During his tenure, his teams won two CCAA National Championships (1979-80 and 1980-81) and six OCAA Provincial Championships (1977-78, 1978-79, 1979-80, 1980-81, 2003-04 and 2006-07). His teams won 13 total Provincial medals (6 Gold, 3 Silver, 4 Bronze) and posted an amazing OCAA League record of 429 wins and 261 losses. During that time, he was named CCAA Coach of the Year in 1995-96 and named the OCAA Coach of the Year four times (1990-91, 1995-96, 1999-00 and 2006-07). Johnston is the third Fanshawe coach to be inducted into the OCAA Hall of Fame.
